Block Groups in Somerset

The SCA encourages residents to organize neighborhood block groups as a means to enhance social interaction, share information and discuss common issues.  Block groups also provide an opportunity for learning how to prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters or how to maintain your property to reduce criminal behavior and how to report crime.

Block groups add value to the neighborhood:

  • Community Building - When neighbors come together to form a block group their ability to communicate with one another and share resources not only improves quality of life but also improves our mutual resilience to a range of potential circumstances.
  • Inclusiveness - Given our diverse neighborhood with cultures and languages from all over the world, block groups also give us a chance to meet each other and connect on a personal level.
  • Preparedness - Some block groups are formed around programs such as Map Your Neighborhood which provides a structured approach for preparing for and responding to disasters.  Residents learn how to help themselves and their neighbors.  Community resilience is improved.
  • Security and Crime - When neighbors look out for each other and call the police when they see something, security is improved, and crime is reduced.  Some block groups are formed around programs such as Block Watch which provides a structure for improving community security.
  • Meetings - Regular (typically annual) meetings help maintain social connections and provide opportunities for additional training, refreshers and welcoming new neighbors.
  • Thanks! - Neighbors make a big difference when they are able to work together and connect. We are thankful for our volunteer group leaders and members who help make our community safer and stronger.

How to Join

To join a block group, please email somersetprepares@gmail.com with your home address and we will do our best to match you to an existing group.   If there is no group in your part of Somerset, we'll try to match you with others nearby who have expressed interest in being in a group.
