Strengthening Emergency Preparedness Among Neighbors

Get ready…Somerset’s Personal and Neighborhood Emergency Preparedness Program is expanding.  Currently, sixteen Somerset neighborhoods have been organized, encompassing 579 households, or 43% of all Somerset households.

Neighborhood groups consist of 40 to 50 homes, along one or two common streets.

By organizing your neighborhood, friendships and supportive networks are established.

The City of Bellevue offers free classes and practical workshops for preparing your neighborhood.  Classes vary from first aid, light search and rescue, safety and security to coordinating how to help neighbors in need.

Somerset’s easy Five Step Neighborhood Emergency Preparedness program will get you started in organizing your Somerset street.

Drano Bombs

Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be laying in your yards or in the gutter, etc.

Pay attention to this.

  • Plastic bottle with a cap
  • A little Drano
  • A little water
  • A small piece of foil

Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!!

No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc..

People are finding these bombs in mailboxes and in their yards, just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the trash.

But, you'll never make it!!! It takes about 30 seconds to blow after you move the thing.

See "SNOPES" below....it's true.

72 Hour Emergency Kit

Vernon Owens of the Bellevue Fire Department sent out a State of Washington 72 Hour Emergency Kit. He mentioned this was very important because in the wake of a disaster it would be quite a while before emergency services came into any neighbor where there was not a disasterous situation.

Besides organizing your neighbor, one of the most practical things to do is obtain some of the items in this list and have them in your home and in your car. Many of us will be out of our homes when an emergency occurs.
